INTERESTING SIDELINES.
The more you keep learning as a creative, the more you have to offer. So here’s one sideline of mine. I’ve developed nine psychology-based apps for the iOS app store. Including this one, that got purchasers in over 40 nations. (Company: MightyGorilla)
The idea was simple. There were lots of dating apps. But not many apps that helped when dating went horribly wrong. So I came up with “Unbreak your Heart”. As a copywriter, I was used to creating broadcast scripts and developing structured messaging hierarchies. To these, I added psychological techniques from Jungian and Ericksonian psychology. The same techniques I used to change the way people felt about products and services - could now be used to change the way they felt about their lives.
I was the scriptwriter. Content provider. Designer. Sound engineer. Voice talent. And coder. I wore several hats that I didn’t normally wear. It was a steep learning curve. But it all seemed somehow to work.
“Unbreak your Heart” got great online reviews. And users in over 40 nations. It was joined by eight other apps I developed for the “practical psychology” space.
These apps gave me another way to use the skills I’d learned in advertising to help people. They also pushed me to learn new skills - that allowed me to better understand and appreciate the tools, techniques, processes, abilities and challenges of technologists I worked alongside. Enabling me to be a better collaborator and colleague in agencies and tech companies.
